Sorry for the mistake.
You are completely correct Paul.
Don't go to an apple store and ask for the jines app.
Better off using iTunes.

Hello Peter

Just for clarity, for not so 'app' minded types, people should search at the iTunes store, not the Apple shop online.

I was shocked to see the news about David English House. It really woke me up to realize that if DEH could go under, what about my own school?

I also have been an ETJ member from near the beginning. I really enjoyed going to the workshops and training courses. Even experienced teachers can benefit from them.

Best of luck David, teachers, staff, and students.

What's wrong with you? Boy I have been places where if you said that with the incorrect tone you could wind up without your front teeth.
What a great story.
I am going to have a bit of a net search to see if there is such a page already existing. Perhaps ETJ has something for their teachers?
But if not it is something to seriously consider.
I already have a few goodies to throw in and it could be worthwhile for all of us.

To add...the list of suggestions can also be used for quizzes. Recently my high school students were mentioning to each other that a lot of what we do in class comes up in school. I would like more of my students saying that.

Dear RI
Yes there are of course lots of courses to choose from and many of these can be for individual enrolments.
One key area to look at is whether the course concentrates on classroom teaching of English and is not just another pathway to (or a subject of) a Masters program in linguistics. It is important to maximise the limited time available and concentrate on classroom methodologies.
Last sumer we held several one day workshops around Tokyo. These workshops were presented by Griffith University, Australia and we also held a 3-day workshop at Kokushikan University in Setegaya ward also conducted by Griffith. We may be looking at doing this again.
But in relation to an overseas program, Jines is also looking at a group program (1-week) to the Centre of English Studies Dublin, Ireland for February 2011 whereby Japanese teachers from around Japan can join and take advantage of a cheap rate for accommodation and lessons.
We will keep you posted here and in the Jines Newsletter.

We have just completed a school open day and it was very successful with the school picking up another 4 students.
We decided to advertise two sessions, one for kindy and one for elementary school ages and although we received only a few bookings for each we invited some of our current students to attend to lift the mood of the day.
This was a good idea as it gave the day a real fun and enjoyable atmosphere.
The only thing we didn't do (and should have done) was to advertise for adults to drop by if they wanted too.
We have had a couple of adults pass through since the open day who had seen the promotion but thought it only for kids. This could have been rectified by including a line saying all welcome whether you are attending the actual trial classes or not.
It will definitely be on the posters and fliers for next time.

Thanks a lot for the reply! I've been thinking about using a projector for some time now, as it seems like a really good teaching tool.

Not quite the same as mentioned above (and this is the first I have heard of it) but we did have a school open a "branch" only 20 metres from us in a small local public hall often used for funerals.
They used this for 12-months until finally a group of local shops complained to city hall and had them relocate to rented premises.
The crazy thing is that they now advertise on their brochures that they have two schools in our area.

I agree entirely with Ken.
Online education can be a very useful and effective tool and there are no doubts that there will be a growing role in the future. But as Ken has pointed out some these programs leave a lot to be desired and do not provide an adequate English language experience.
Indeed we (Beat Eikaiwa) were approached by a group of teachers living in Nepal to supply them Japanese students. At ¥500 for a 1-hour class through Skype you have to wonder what they are providing.
I think we have to take a good look at their materials and learning strategies before we start to promote it in any way or form.
